Puzzles Like You
I’ve been a distant fan of 90′s Britpop for few years now. I’m a decade short, but that’s fine. We’re all playing catch-up. Or, at least we should be (Have you heard Sam Cooke: Live at the Harlem Square Club? No? Get on it!).
Mojave 3 is a band formed from the remnants of Slowdive, a popular British band from the 90′s. Their sound transitioned from quintessential ambient swirls and echoes to a more grown-up devotion to melody and brevity. No hiding behind Brian Eno’s soundscapes and mumbled whisper-lyrics. There is more energy and confidence here too. You want to play Mojave 3 in your car, not your bedroom.
I just bought their album, Puzzles Like You, this weekend and can’t get enough of it. I’ve probably listened to it 10 times. It is so well-balanced. Soft but driving. Catchy and effortless. List to the title song and you’ll know what I mean.

I loved Slowdive’s Souvlaki when it came out in the early ’90s. The song Alison which is bedroom burner (and not an Elvis Costello cover) is still in my desert island collection. Kooky cover art on Puzzles Like You. It looks like Dr. Suess and Joan Miro were locked in the same room and told to come up with something with a couple of green and red crayons.
Thanks – I just grabbed the album on eMusic.
