“Best Of” Lists
In December 2001 I put together a compilation of my favorite songs that were released that year and shared it with my friends. I thought that if I could encourage those friends to do the same, we’d get exposed to different music, learn something about one another’s tastes and get a smile out of the overlaps.
Some folks disagree with my criterion that the song has to have been released somewhere in the world during the calendar year. That’s cool, choose your own criteria for your list. I’m far, far, far from being up on the latest, obscure, indie bands; but my way challenges me to discover new music and that’s why I do it.
So, it’s that time of year again and the shortlisting for “Ken’s Best of 2007″ is done. Starting next week, I’ll post a song a day from the list here with a few words on why it was included. I’ll use this week to focus on some superlatives that didn’t make the cut for this year’s list.
To give some background, here are my “Best Of” lists from 2001-06.

I love your criteria–I just can’t meet it. I can’t distinguish when the stuff is released. I listen to Pandora and think “This is a great new song!” and then I look it up and find it out it was released 10 years ago.

That’s why I don’t think it really matters. You’re still going through a process of discovery. If you shared a “New Discoveries of 2007″ list, it would be just as interesting and provocative for the rest of us. So, lay something on us brother!
